Join us for the biggest Origami event in San Francisco's Japantown - Origami Palooza!  This FREE event celebrates Origami - the Art of Paper Folding. 

Folders of all ages and skill levels welcome. 

Highlights include: 

Fold With A Master - Join this year’s Master, Chris Alexander, author of Star Wars Origami I & Star Wars Origami II

Fold Your Own - Learn a really cool model or two from our team of local Origami teachers

Compete - Submit your best work to compete for prizes (advanced registration required)

Miniature Folding Challenge - Fold a model at the event from 3 inch paper or smaller

Competition Details

Overview: The Origami Palooza competition invites origami enthusiasts of all skill levels to showcase their creativity and craftsmanship. This year’s competition features two distinct categories: the General Entry Category and the Dragon Challenge Category. The General Entry category will also be split into two age groups - 12 and under, and 13+. Whether you’re a fan of traditional designs or a master of mythical creatures, there’s a place for your artistry. Participants may submit up to one model to each category.

1. General Entry Category

The General Entry Category welcomes a broad range of origami creations. Participants are encouraged to submit their most impressive and innovative works, whether they are traditional, modern, or experimental. This category is open to all types of origami, whether it is an original creation or folded by following instructions from a book or video. 

Submission Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Open to all. Participants will be divided into two age groups - 12 and under, and 13+.
  • Entry Limit: Each participant can submit one model.
  • Judging Criteria: Originality, technical skill, complexity, and visual appeal will all be taken into consideration.
  • Materials: Any kind of paper with no restrictions on size or color. 

How to Enter:

  • Submission Format: Models may be dropped off at, or shipped to Paper Tree (1743 Buchanan Street, San Francisco CA 94115). 
  • Deadline: In-person submissions will be accepted up until 10:30AM on September 1st. Shipped models must be received no later than Saturday, August 31st.

2. Dragon Challenge Category

The Dragon Challenge Category is a special competition dedicated to the creation of dragon-themed origami. This category is perfect for those who have a flair for fantasy. Participants are invited to fold dragons of any size and style, showcasing their unique interpretation of these legendary creatures.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Open to all. 
  • Entry Limit: Each participant can submit one model.
  • Judging Criteria: Originality, technical skill, complexity, and visual appeal will all be taken into consideration.
  • Materials: Any kind of paper with no restrictions on size or color.
